Subaru Outback Smells Like Burning Rubber, Hi I sometimes catch a whiff of what smells like burning rubber on my 03 VDC H6 wagon. 5 cvt with 60,000 miles on it. I really only notice it when the car is not moving, and the smell is pretty strong. I did notice something odd recently. today on the way home i noticed an odd rubber like burning smell first smelled it about 10 min after leaving work but it went away and figured it was something i passed by Help me find the leak. A tire rubbing against the wheel well or the suspension of Subaru Outback will cause burning rubber smell. There is an oval, quarter sized schorched area on I have a 2005 Outback which occasionally exhibits a burning rubber smell. 2 out of 3 times I've smelled something burning in my Subarus that's what it was. If I open Subaru was replacing this faulty gasket at no cost to owners mine was done at 65K at 180K it was fine no issues. The It's not the same smell as burning rubber but not far from it IMO.
